CA 19-9

Measured in U/mL

A pancreatic and biliary marker — best known for following known disease, and for reading high whenever bile is not draining properly.

What the numbers mean

These are the ranges BioForge works to. They are not the same as a lab's reference range, which is built from the general population rather than from people who feel well.

Low
<2 · Not meaningful
Optimal
<37 · Some people cannot make it
High
>37 · Rule out bile obstruction first

What moves CA 19-9

Rises sharply with any bile duct obstruction, with gallstones, pancreatitis, cirrhosis, and thyroid disease. About one person in twenty lacks the blood-group enzyme needed to produce it at all, so their result stays near zero even when disease is present.
