Sedimentation Rate (ESR)

Measured in mm/hr

How fast red cells settle in a tube — an old, inexpensive, non-specific measure of inflammation. It moves slowly over weeks, so it complements hs-CRP rather than repeating it.

What the numbers mean

These are the ranges BioForge works to. They are not the same as a lab's reference range, which is built from the general population rather than from people who feel well.

Low
<2 · Not meaningful
Optimal
Men <15 · Women <20
High
>30 investigate · >50 urgent work-up

What moves Sedimentation Rate (ESR)

Rises with infection, autoimmune disease, anemia, kidney disease, pregnancy, and simply with age. Falls when red cells are crowded — which matters here, because testosterone therapy raises hematocrit and can mask a real inflammatory signal.
